GMC Safari Van

In 1909, General Motors purchased the 'Rapid Motor Vehicle Company', the developer of the earliest commercial trucks ever designed. GMC Truck comes from General Motors Company Truck, though in 1996 the last word was left aside, becoming simply GMC. A great period of time, from 1925 until late 1980's, GMC also produced busses. Moreover, GMC manufactured military vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks or motor homes. Currently, GMC produces the following models: pick up trucks, vans, light duty trucks, medium duty trucks and SUVs. Over the time, there were great resemblances between GMC and Chevrolet, their trucks being almost identical. Still, throughout the years the differences between them have varied.

The GMC Safari Van is one of the van models that GMC produced. It first appeared in 1985, simultaneously with the Chevrolet Astro; they rivaled the Dodge Caravan and the Japanese Toyota Van. Not only were they 8-pessenger vans, but they also could be used for carrying great weight. Converters also used them as the basis for small conversion vans. Both the Safari and the Chevrolet come in two generations. Unlike the car-based, front wheel drive minivans which cannot carry great weight, the Safari and the Chevrolet go up to 5,500 lb with proper equipment; the key element that enables them to pull so much weight is their truck-based platform. The Safari was a rear-wheel drive vehicle, but in 1990 a full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) system was made optional. The AWD version had lower fuel economy: 17 miles per gallon highway, in comparison to 21 miles for rear-drive vans. In 2005, General Motors reached the conclusion that there is no use for wasting money on re-designing a model that no longer sales. It seems that the Safari couldn't keep up with the federal standards for side impact and head injury. In 2007 GMC replaced the Safari Van with the Arcadia 7-pessenger crossover SUV.
