The Pontiac Grand Am has been a product of General Motors for a long time, but it has not been in continuous production. The first production time period was from 1973 -1975 and the second fro 1978 until 1980, and both of these Grand Am models were classified as mid-sized cars. The Grand Am was once again produced starting in the year 1985 and this time lasted until 2005. This time the Pontiac Grand Am was classified as a compact car.

The first two generations were all built in Pontiac, Michigan and based on the A body platform.
